Gloria Jean’s Coffees crowns their 2012 Australian Barista Champion

Nathan Trebbin from Castletown, Queensland was announced Gloria Jean’s Coffees Australian Barista Champion for 2012. Nathan won the prestigious title amongst fierce competition, which showcased Gloria Jean’s Coffees’ most talented and creative baristas from around the country.

Eight Barista finalists presented four espressos, four lattes and four signature beverages to the panel of judges, who critiqued against World Barista Championship standards. Judges awarded points for each finalist’s professional performance and how the individual barista’s personality and flair were presented to the audience.

Sensory judge Kane Bodiam from United Supplies said Nathan displayed precision and technique, as well as an infectious enthusiasm for coffee. Nathan’s Espresso was of the highest quality in the competition, but it was his signature beverage, the Spiced Date Espresso, that won the points and taste-buds of the judges. “Nathan’s Spiced Date Espresso showcased creativity, innovation and a curiosity for coffee – it had the perfect balance of sweetness,” said Bodiam.
Nathan will move on to compete in the Gloria Jean’s Coffees International Barista Championship, representing Australia, in New Delhi, India later this year in October. “We have great confidence and faith that Nathan will bring home the title as 2012 Gloria Jean’s Coffees International Barista Champion.”

As the winner of the championship, Nathan also received a trip to Hawaii, Kona to enjoy the Kona coffee festival.
After receiving his title and prize, Nathan thanked his Franchise Partners, Jim and Marianna Tsilavis, and 2010 Gloria Jean’s Coffees International and Australian Barista Champion, James Pedrazzini, for teaching and training him throughout his barista career. Nathan also expressed his gratitude to Gloria Jean’s Coffees for the opportunity to compete amongst his peers. “This competition has been a lot of fun,” said Trebbin.
